Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
