The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
