Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
