The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
